The Beginnings of Celtic Art

Historical records attribute the development of early Celtic art to ancient central European tribes of Celtic descent. Just like with the other aspects of Celtic culture, its presence and influence extended to other regions in Europe like Ireland and Britain.

Celtic art bore the strong influence of Mediterranean nations whom the former had actively traded with during the pre-Roman period. The influence of Etruscan and Greek was evidently present in the style of Celt drinking vessels. The use of animal decorations in Celtic art pieces is attributed to the strong influence by Scythian and other oriental cultures.

The Celts added their unique signature in these ancient art pieces. Human figures, which were distinctively formulaic and stylized in Greek art, became more personalized. Human figures in Celt art objects were portrayed as having unique facial expressions and typical Celtic dress and hairstyle. The Celts also added comical elements in the human figures in their art pieces.

While leatherwork and fabrics bore the strong presence of Celtic art, few were able to survive the ravages of time. The majority of the Celtic artefacts of the pre-Roman period that remain are those that were formed from metal work. These include Celtic art in weapons, jewellery and other high-status items such as drinking vessels.
